HISTORY & BACKGROUND

History

In April 2002, INDIVUMED GmbH, Center for Cancer Research at the Israelitisches Krankenhaus, was founded in Hamburg, Germany. The founders of INDIVUMED include; Dr. Hartmut Juhl, Associate Professor of Surgery and Oncology at Georgetown University, from the Israelitisches Krankenhaus, Dr. Carsten Zornig, Professor of Surgery and Chairman of the Department of Surgery, and Dr. Peter Layer, Professor of Internal Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Medicine.

During its first year INDIVUMED was located at the Chemical Institute of Hamburg University. In October 2003 INDIVUMED moved to the new Research Building located on the campus of the Israelitic Hospital in the heart of Hamburg's prospering life science region. INDIVUMED Inc., a daughter of INDIVUMED GmbH, was founded in Spring 2004. INDIVUMED Inc. has its US office in Kensington, MD (Washington DC Metropolitan area) that supports US partners in academia and industry.

INDIVUMED's main objective is the development of an individualized medical treatment for cancer patients, especially those suffering from GI-tract (colorectal, gastric, pancreatic), breast, prostate and lung cancer. Therefore, INDIVUMED's Research Laboratories have established a highly efficient target identification and validation program and look for new diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets. In addition, INDIVUMED collaborates with leading academic and industrial research institutions, provides access to its resources and target validation platform and, last-but-not-least, can perform a broad spectrum of molecular biological and biochemical analytical tests as a service for its customers. INDIVUMED sets a new quality standard for cancer research providing an Integrated Analytical Platform (IAP). This IAP includes a comprehensive collection of biospecimen linked with extensive clinical and sample collection data, strictly respecting patients' confidentiality as well as international ethical and legal regulations.

Located in Hamburg, Germany's second largest city, INDIVUMED collaborates with leading oncological hospitals in the metropolitan area and has permission to directly access patients with its own personnel for interviewing and sampling. Thereby, INDIVUMED can achieve and guarantee high quality, standardized sample and data collection (strictly following SOP-criteria) and completeness of its samples and corresponding data. In addition, INDIVUMED supports Outpatient Follow-up Clinics at each partner hospital, through which it obtains accurate follow-up information and additional samples on regular basis post-surgery.

INDIVUMED truly integrates clinical care, biobanking, research and, thus, creates a unique structure to accelerate cancer research that benefits patients.
