Biospecimens
The following tissues and fluids are available from Indivumed.
- Frozen human tumor tissue
- Formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tumor tissue
- Matched normal tissue
- Matched serum, plasma & urine
All tissues and fluids are collected following Standardized Operating Procedures (SOP's). This includes, if possible, accrual at identical time points before and after surgery and identical transport, preparation and storage procedures. A special effort focuses on short ischemia time of tissue, which has a significant influence on protein – and gene expression patterns
(Spruessel et al., BioTechniques 2004 (PDF)).
Ischemia time: In most cases tissue is snap frozen or formalin fixed in less than 12 minutes following resection. Low ischemia times are necessary to reflect the molecular reality of the disease in the tumor and tissue. In addition, intrasurgical ischemia time (e.g. time point of vessel ligation of main arteries) is exactly documented.
Tissue localization: Tumor samples are obtained from defined tumor areas and each tissue sample can be assigned to its location in the primary tumor because of standardized excision procedures (central or peripheral part of the tumor).
Tumor and other tissue types
- Prostate cancer
- Lung cancer
- Colorectal cancer
- Breast cancer
- Gastric cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Bladder cancer
- Esophageal cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Benign diseases (adenomas, benign lung and breast diseases, etc.)
- Custom studies
Tissue preparations: Frozen tissue blocks and formalin fixed and paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue blocks as well as frozen and FFPE tissue sections and preparations thereof including RNA, cDNA, and protein preparations are available. In addition, subpopulations of cells can be isolated using laser capture microdissection (LCM) technology. On request, tissue arrays can be prepared.
Serum and plasma
Blood is obtained shortly before surgery. Additional blood samples are collected during follow-up visits at outpatient clinics located at each partner hospital. The following preparations are available:
• Serum
• Plasma
• Mononuclear blood cells (RNA, cDNA, DNA preparations)
Urine
Urine is obtained immediately before surgery. Additional urine samples are collected during follow-up visits at outpatient clinics located at the partner hospital. Sediment and supernatant of the collected urine is separated before storage. The following preparations are available:
• Urine supernatant
• Urine sediment
Corresponding clinical data for all tissues and fluids
- Basic clinical data: Age, gender, diagnosis, histopathology
- Comprehensive data: Extensive patient and clinical data, family history,
lifestyle, medications and disease history, haematology, clinical chemistry, tumor markers, sample collection data, etc.
- Follow up data: Drug therapy and outcome
